The cave is a sea cave, and a sea cave keeps the sea's hours. No boat goes in when the swell is up, and no kayak group launches when the skipper of the support boat would not. That one fact shapes the whole calendar more than any temperature chart does.
The second fact is the law. Since August 2024 a motor boat may spend two minutes inside and a guided kayak group up to eight, with no landing on the sand and no swimming in. Timing your visit is therefore about the coastline around those minutes and about the light that falls through the hole while you are under it. The products linked on this page are GetYourGuide listings; durations and meeting points are taken from each listing.
The short answer
Visit between May and October for reliable calm seas and the strongest light through the skylight. Book a late-morning slot if the photograph matters most and an early slot if you want fewer craft around you. From November to March the Algarve is quieter and generally cheaper, and tours sail on calm days only, with kayaks cancelled first. Wear swimwear under your clothes, bring a towel and a windproof layer, and expect one to two and a half hours on the water depending on the listing.

When should you visit Benagil Cave?
From May to October, in late morning for the light, or in the first slot of the day for fewer craft. The sea decides the rest.
Three clocks run at the same time here. The season clock says May to October: that is when the Atlantic is calm often enough for operators to publish a daily timetable and keep it. The sun clock says late morning: the cave faces south, and the direct beam through the roof is strongest from roughly ten until about one between May and October. Earlier the floor is in shadow; later the beam climbs the back wall.
The crowd clock runs the other way. The cave is busiest between eleven and three in summer, which is exactly when the light is best. The 2025 amendment allows up to five motor boats and up to fourteen paddle craft inside at once, so a midday visit means company. Book the first departure if you want the water to yourself, and accept a dimmer floor. Book late morning if the photograph is the point. There is no slot that gives you both.
Whatever the slot, the two-minute rule for boats and the eight-minute rule for kayak groups apply. The full set of rules is in our guide to the Benagil cave rules.

What is the best month to visit the Algarve?
June or September. Both bring dry weather and warm seas without the full August crowds, and both sit inside the Benagil tour season.
Using the IPMA climate normals for Faro, June averages 5 mm of rain and September 22 mm. Mean daytime highs climb from 21 degrees in April to 29 in July and settle at 23 in October. June gives you long days, a calm sea and a cave that has not yet filled with August visitors. September keeps the warm water from summer and adds cooler afternoons on the cliffs.
July and August are the safest bets for flat seas and the busiest months in the cave and on the Benagil clifftop car park, which fills by mid-morning in summer. May and October are the shoulders: most departures run, but a windy week can cancel a day or two. The guided kayak tour from Benagil is the product most sensitive to that, because kayaks are the first craft to be kept ashore.
Paddle into the cave yourself: the guided kayak tour from Benagil includes kayak, paddles, life jacket and waterproof bags, and the listing states a duration of two hours.
Book thisWhat is the rainiest month in the Algarve?
December, with an IPMA normal of 90 mm at Faro. July is the driest at 1 mm. Rain is concentrated from October to March and almost absent from June to August.
The pattern is simple. Autumn turns wet from October, winter stays wet through December and January, spring dries out from April, and June to August are close to rainless. A single December storm can bring more rain than the whole summer. Rain itself rarely stops a boat; the swell that comes with it does. A dry, grey December day with a flat sea is a better cave day than a sunny one with a running swell.
The table uses the IPMA Faro normals for 1991 to 2020. IPMA publishes mean daytime highs for January, April, July and October; the other rows show the range between the two nearest published months rather than a measured value.
| Month | Rain (IPMA normal) | Mean daytime high | Cave tours |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 49 mm | 16 degrees | Calm days only |
| February | 42 mm | 16 to 21 degrees | Calm days only |
| March | 47 mm | 16 to 21 degrees | Calm days only |
| April | 39 mm | 21 degrees | Most departures |
| May | 26 mm | 21 to 29 degrees | Full season |
| June | 5 mm | 21 to 29 degrees | Full season |
| July | 1 mm | 29 degrees | Full season, busiest |
| August | 3 mm | 23 to 29 degrees | Full season, busiest |
| September | 22 mm | 23 to 29 degrees | Full season |
| October | 56 mm | 23 degrees | Most departures |
| November | 76 mm | 16 to 23 degrees | Calm days only |
| December | 90 mm | 16 to 23 degrees | Calm days only |
What is low season in the Algarve, and when is it cheapest?
November to March. The coast is quieter and generally cheaper, most beach-facing businesses in Benagil close, and tours sail when the sea allows.
Low season follows the rain. From November to March the big hotels and the beach bars wind down, flights and rooms are generally cheaper, and the Benagil clifftop car park has space at noon. The village itself is a hamlet of about sixty residents with a few restaurants and no supermarket, and most of the beach-facing places close for the winter. Come for the cliffs, the empty Seven Hanging Valleys trail and the chance of a cave visit, not for a resort.
The trade is reliability. Operators do not publish a firm winter timetable; they sail on calm days and cancel when the forecast turns. If the cave is the one thing you came for, keep two or three days free rather than one. The view from above does not depend on the sea at all. Do Benagil tours run in winter?
Yes, on calm days. Kayak tours are cancelled first, boats follow when the swell builds, and the swell, not the tide, makes the decision.
Nothing in the edital closes the cave for the winter. What stops a tour is the sea state. A moderate swell makes the western opening unsafe for a motor boat and the eastern one impossible for a kayak, and every listing on this site says the boat enters the caves only when conditions allow, at the skipper's discretion. Kayaks and SUPs go first; a boat tour may still run and simply skip the cave, showing you the coast and the arches of Praia da Marinha instead.
Tide is not the issue. The cave does not dry out at low water and does not flood shut at high water. Watch the swell forecast, book a tour with free cancellation and ask the operator the evening before whether they expect to enter. The Armação de Pêra boat tour lists the Benagil cave as its final stop and gives weather cancellations an alternative date; the Carvoeiro boat trip does the same.

Short ride, long coastline: the Armação de Pêra boat covers about ten caves and fifteen wild beaches with the Benagil cave as the final stop, in a listed one hour.
Book thisWhat should you wear on a Benagil cave tour?
Swimwear under light clothes, a towel, hat, sunscreen, a windproof layer and water shoes. Life jackets are provided and are compulsory for the whole visit.
The edital requires life jackets for everyone for the whole visit, and helmets near rockfall-risk cliffs and caves, so you do not need to bring either; the listings include them. Bring the rest:
- Swimwear under your clothes. Several boat listings include a swim stop outside the caves when conditions allow, and the kayak listing includes a swim break.
- A towel and a dry change. You may get your feet wet boarding at Armação de Pêra, according to that listing, and kayakers get wet by definition.
- Hat and sunscreen. There is no shade on a RIB and none in a kayak.
- A windproof layer. Speed over water is cold even in July, and spring and autumn mornings more so.
- Water shoes or sandals that stay on. Boarding from sand and climbing in and out of a kayak are easier without loose flip-flops.
- A waterproof bag for your phone. The kayak listing includes waterproof bags; boat tours do not say.
For the kayak tour, the listing says to arrive thirty minutes early for the water safety briefing, and forty-five to sixty minutes early in high season to find parking at the meeting point, a car park called O Litoral. Which tour suits you is covered in our pick of the best Benagil cave tour.

How cold is it inside the cave?
Cooler than the beach. The floor is shaded except where the beam falls, and the sea breeze funnels through the openings. No official temperature figure exists.
Nobody measures the air inside the Algar de Benagil, and this site will not invent a number. What you will feel is the difference: a sunny beach outside and a shaded, damp chamber inside, with wind moving between the two sea openings and the hole above. On a boat you are inside for two minutes and will barely notice. In a kayak group you may be inside for up to eight minutes, wet from the paddle, and the windproof layer earns its place.
Spring and autumn mornings are the times to feel it most. The sea is still cool, the sun is lower and the cliffs keep the morning shade for longer. Pack for the ride, not for the cave.
One hour from Benagil beach: the small-group Taruga boat passes fifteen to twenty caves and the Alfanzina lighthouse, with cave stops of about three minutes each according to the listing.
Book thisHow long is the Benagil cave tour?
Between one hour and two and a half hours depending on the listing. The time inside the cave itself is two minutes for a boat and up to eight for a kayak group, by law.
Every tour on this site is a coastline trip with a cave visit in the middle. The listings state these durations:
- One hour: the Benagil beach boat and the Armação de Pêra boat, both departing within sight of the cave.
- One and a half hours: the Carvoeiro boat and the Portimão RIB, the latter with a sunset option.
- Two hours: the guided kayak tour from Benagil, with a stop at Praia da Marinha and a swim break.
- Two and a half hours: the Albufeira and Lagos boats, both of which add a dolphin search that is not guaranteed. The Albufeira listing does not state that its boat enters the cave.
Pick by how much coast you want to see and how far you want to travel, not by the cave time, which is fixed. The Portimão RIB tour works for anyone staying on the Portimão side; the listing states one and a half hours and a route past Ferragudo, Carvoeiro and Algar Seco before the cave.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Benagil cave open in winter?
Yes. The cave is not closed; access is regulated. Tours sail on calm days only between November and March, and kayak tours are cancelled before boat tours.
What time of day is best for photos inside Benagil cave?
Late morning from May to October, when the sun stands high enough to send a direct beam through the roof onto the water. Early slots are quieter but the floor is in shadow.
Can I visit Benagil cave at high tide?
Yes. Tide does not decide access; the swell does. A moderate swell keeps boats and kayaks out at any tide, and a flat sea lets them in at any tide.
Does it rain a lot in the Algarve in summer?
No. The IPMA normals for Faro give 5 mm in June, 1 mm in July and 3 mm in August. The wet months are October to March, with December the wettest at 90 mm.
