Benagil Cave from Above

You do not need a boat to see the Benagil cave. A fenced clifftop path passes directly above the roof opening, and from there you look down through the hole onto the sand and the sea below. It costs nothing. It takes five to ten minutes from the village beach. This guide tells you how to reach the viewpoint, what you will and will not see, how the longer Seven Hanging Valleys trail fits in, and when a guided walk is worth your money.

Every boat tour on this site sells two minutes inside the cave. The clifftop gives you a different angle on the same room: the circular hole in the roof, the beach inside, the boats and kayaks sliding in from the sea, and the light moving across the sand. It is the view most people have seen in photographs and the one most visitors skip.

The limits are plain. You cannot climb down. You cannot get inside from the land. The rock at the edge is thin and the fence is there for a reason. What you get is a free, unhurried look at a place that charges by the minute from the water, and a coastline walk that many consider the finest in the Algarve.

The short answer

Walk east from Praia de Benagil along the marked clifftop path for five to ten minutes and you reach the fenced skylight. From Praia da Marinha the walk is about 30 minutes west. The view is free and open at all hours. You cannot descend to the shore or enter the cave from above. For the full coastline, the Seven Hanging Valleys trail runs 5.7 km one way from Vale Centeanes to Marinha and passes the cave roughly halfway.

Can I see Benagil Cave from above?

Yes. A fenced viewpoint on the clifftop sits directly above the roof opening, and you look down through the hole onto the beach inside. It is free and reachable on foot.

The Algar de Benagil is the one sea cave on this stretch of coast that was eroded both from the side, by the waves, and from the top, where part of the Miocene limestone roof collapsed. The result is a round opening in the ceiling, which locals call o olho, the eye. From the clifftop that opening is at your feet, behind a fence. Below it you see the pocket of sand, the water lit from the two sea entrances, and, in season, a line of kayaks hugging the eastern wall while a motor boat idles at the western one.

This is the legal land-side view, and the Capitania's rules do not touch it. Nothing stops you standing there at dawn or at dusk. What the rules do forbid is getting from the clifftop to the sand: landing or using the beach inside the cave is prohibited for everyone, and there is no path anyway. Our guide to the Benagil rules sets out the full edital.

Can you walk into Benagil Cave?

No. The cave sits at the foot of sheer limestone cliffs, the skylight is fenced, and there is no path, rope or ladder down. Entry is from the water on a licensed tour.

Search results still show pictures of people standing on the sand under the hole. Those photographs predate August 2024, when the Capitania do Porto de Portimão prohibited landing on the inside beach, and most of them were taken by swimmers or by passengers dropped off from boats. Both routes are now closed by law. Entering by swimming or with floating aids is banned, and boats may not let anyone off.

From the land there was never a way in. The cliffs here are vertical, the rock at the rim is thin and undercut, and the drop from the fence to the sand is the height of a building. People have been rescued from the cave after trying. The myth that you can hike down to the cave is one of the most persistent on the Algarve; the trail gives you the view from above, nothing more.

If being inside matters, the two legal routes are a licensed motor boat, which stays two minutes, or a guided kayak group, which may stay up to eight. The rules guide explains both.

How to see Benagil Cave from the top

From Praia de Benagil, walk east along the clifftop for five to ten minutes. From Praia da Marinha, walk west for about 30 minutes. The fenced viewpoint is on the path above the cave.

Two starting points, two car parks.

  • From Praia de Benagil. Park in the small clifftop lot above the village beach, which fills by mid-morning in summer. Take the path east out of the car park along the cliff. Within five to ten minutes you reach the fenced opening above the cave. Flat shoes are enough; it is a short, sandy track.
  • From Praia da Marinha. Park in the large free lot above Marinha, which also fills in high season. Follow the clifftop path west for about 30 minutes, past several smaller sinkholes and arches, until the Benagil skylight appears on your right. You return the same way, or continue down to Benagil beach and the cafes.

Go when the light is in the cave. Direct sun through the hole is strongest in late morning from roughly May to October, because the cave faces south. Before 9 am the sand inside is in shadow and the car parks are empty; around midday the sand glows and the car parks are full. Choose your trade-off. Our timing guide covers the seasons and the swell in detail.

Can you hike to the Benagil caves?

Yes, on the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. It runs about 5.7 km one way from Praia de Vale Centeanes to Praia da Marinha, takes two to three hours, and passes the Benagil skylight roughly halfway.

The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is the land-side classic of the Lagoa coast. It starts at Praia de Vale Centeanes on the eastern edge of Carvoeiro and ends at Praia da Marinha, following the clifftop the whole way. Along the route you pass the Alfanzina lighthouse, a large sinkhole in the cliff plateau, a string of hidden coves and, about halfway, the fenced opening above the Benagil cave. Walking the full length and back makes about 11.5 km and four to six hours.

Do not underestimate it. The path is rough in places, with loose stone, steps cut into the rock and steep dips into each valley. There is no shade for most of the route and no water on the way. The edges are sheer. In July and August start at first light or walk in the late afternoon. Bring more water than you think you need, a hat, and shoes with grip. The trail is not a stroll for flip-flops.

If you want the cave but not the full hike, start at Marinha and turn back at the skylight. That gives you the best coastal section in about an hour return.

Want the trail with a geologist's commentary? The guided Seven Hanging Valleys walk starts at Praia da Marinha and the listing states two hours, with 30 minutes at the Benagil skylight.

What are the best photo spots in Benagil?

The fenced skylight from above in late morning, when sun reaches the sand inside; the double arch and elephant rock at Praia da Marinha; and the tunnel through the rock at Praia do Carvalho.

Three spots cover most of the photographs you have seen of this coast.

  1. The Benagil skylight from above. Stand at the fence and shoot straight down. From about May to October the sun reaches the sand through the hole most strongly between late morning and early afternoon, and that is when the colours inside are at their best. A wide lens helps; the opening is close.
  2. Praia da Marinha from the clifftop. The twin arches and the rock formation known as the elephant are a short walk from the Marinha car park, and the viewpoint looks east along the beach. Morning light falls on the cliffs.
  3. Praia do Carvalho. The cove west of Benagil is reached through a tunnel cut in the rock, which frames the beach from inside. The 107 bus from Portimão stops here.

For the view from inside the cave looking up at the hole, there is no substitute for a boat or a kayak. The tour comparison explains which tours enter and for how long.

Is the clifftop above Benagil Cave safe?

Yes, if you stay behind the fences. The rock at the edges is thin and undercut, drops are sheer, and the ground softens after heavy rain. Do not step over for a photograph.

The limestone of the Lagoa coast is eroding from below. What looks like solid ground at the rim can be a thin shelf over an undercut, and the cliffs here shed rock often enough that operators must report rockfalls to the Capitania within two hours. The fences around the Benagil skylight and along the trail mark the limit of safe ground. People who climb over them for a better angle are standing on the thinnest part.

  • Stay behind the fences and on the marked path.
  • Keep children close; the path passes within a few metres of open drops.
  • After heavy rain, which on this coast falls mainly from October to March, the sandy track is slippery and the edges are weaker. Wait a day.
  • Wind on the clifftop is stronger than it feels in the village. Hold onto hats and phones.
  • Carry water; there is none on the path.

Dogs on a leash are fine, and the guided walk's listing says the same. Baby carriages are not; the ground is uneven.

Is a guided walk to Benagil Cave worth it?

Worth it if you want geology, flora and the lesser-known stops explained, or a land day trip from Faro without a car. Not needed if you just want the view: the path is marked and free.

Two products on this site show the cave from above rather than from the water, and both say so plainly.

The Seven Hanging Valleys walking tour is a two hour guided walk according to its listing. It starts at Praia da Marinha, near a red Citroën food truck, and stops at the Marinha viewpoint, the Benagil skylight for 30 minutes, and a third stop the listing keeps secret. The guide covers the observation decks, the geology and the flora. Transport, food and hiking gear are not included; you drive yourself to Marinha and arrive 15 minutes early. The listing admits children over six with an adult and asks for a reasonable level of fitness because of steps and uneven ground.

The land day trip from Faro is a five hour minibus tour, and its listing states in capitals that it is not a boat tour. It visits Algar Seco and the Boneca cave at Carvoeiro for about an hour, spends roughly 30 minutes at the Benagil skylight, then gives about an hour and a half of free time at Praia da Marinha with an optional cliff walk back from the cave. The listing excludes under-16s and anyone with vertigo or a fear of heights. For a visitor based in Faro without a car, it is the simplest way to see the cave at all.

Neither product gets you inside. If the two minutes in the cave matter, add a boat from Benagil beach or book the guided kayak, which paddles about 150 to 200 metres from the beach to the entrance.

What to do near Benagil Cave

Praia da Marinha, Praia do Carvalho, Algar Seco, the Albandeira arch and the town of Carvoeiro are all within a few kilometres. A car links them in a day; the clifftop path links most of them on foot.

The cave is one stop on a short, dense coastline.

  • Praia da Marinha: the double arch and elephant rock, a large free car park, and the eastern end of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. The guided kayak tour's listing includes a stop here.
  • Praia do Carvalho: a cove reached through a tunnel in the rock, west of Benagil, with the nearest bus stop on line 107.
  • Algar Seco: a maze of eroded limestone pools and windows at Carvoeiro, visited by the boats from Portimão and Carvoeiro and by the Faro land tour.
  • Albandeira: a natural arch east of Marinha at the end of the regulated cave zone; boats from Armação de Pêra pass it.
  • Carvoeiro: the resort town west of the cave with the beach square, the boat ticket booths and the trailhead at Vale Centeanes.
  • Alfanzina lighthouse: on the trail between Carvoeiro and Benagil, visible from most of the coast and from the sea.

Paradise Cave, a separate cave nearby with a wider skylight, is sometimes confused with Benagil in photographs. The boats from Benagil beach pass both. If you are deciding between a walk and a boat, our comparison of the tours lays out what each departure point adds.
