How to Get to Benagil Cave

Benagil is a hamlet of about sixty residents on the Lagoa coast, halfway between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. Getting to the village is easy by car and slow by bus. Getting into the cave is a separate question: the law allows entry from the water on a licensed tour, and nothing else. This guide covers the roads, the parking, the bus, the boats that leave from the bigger towns, and where to sleep if the cave is the reason for your trip.

Two decisions shape the day. The first is whether you drive to Benagil itself or join a boat in the town where you are staying. The second is when you arrive, because the clifftop car park in Benagil is small and fills by mid-morning in summer.

Distances on the Algarve are short. Albufeira is about 25 km away, Lagos about 33 km, and Faro airport roughly 55 minutes by car. The boats are a different matter: from Lagos or Albufeira the ride to the cave takes 45 to 60 minutes each way, which is why those tours run longer and sell the coastline, the dolphins and the ride itself around the two minutes the law allows inside the cave.

The short answer

Drive to Benagil or Praia da Marinha, arrive before 9 am in summer, and take a licensed boat or guided kayak tour from the beach. If you have no car, book a boat from Lagos, Albufeira, Portimão or Armação de Pêra and let the tour do the travelling. The bus exists but runs a handful of times a day. Nobody walks or swims into the cave; the clifftop path gives you the free view from above.

How do I get to Benagil sea cave?

By road to Benagil village or Praia da Marinha, then from the water on a licensed boat or guided kayak tour. There is no path, ladder or swim route into the cave.

Benagil sits in the parish of Lagoa e Carvoeiro, roughly at 37.087 N, 8.424 W. The cave is a few hundred metres east of the village beach. By car you reach the hamlet on local roads off the N125, the coastal highway that links Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Albufeira. The village has a handful of houses, a few restaurants and no supermarket.

Reaching the village is the easy part. The cave itself is regulated by the Capitania do Porto de Portimão: motor boats enter by the western opening and stay for two minutes, guided paddle groups enter by the eastern opening for up to eight minutes, and landing on the sand inside or entering by swimming is prohibited. Any tour you book works within those limits, which is why our comparison of the Benagil boat tours spends more time on the coastline than on the cave.

If you would rather not pay at all, walk east from Praia de Benagil along the clifftop for five to ten minutes and look down through the fenced skylight. The view from above is free and needs no boat.

How far is it from Lagos to the Benagil caves?

About 33 km by road, or 35 to 40 minutes by car. By sea the ride from Lagos marina takes 45 to 60 minutes each way, passing Ponta da Piedade.

Lagos is the most popular base in the western Algarve, and the drive to Benagil is simple: N125 east through Portimão and Lagoa, then south to the coast. Allow 40 minutes in summer traffic. The alternative is to let a boat do the work. Boats from Lagos marina head east along the cliffs, round Ponta da Piedade and run the full Lagoa coast before reaching the cave.

The Lagos combo tour with marine biologists is the long-ride option. According to the listing it lasts 2.5 hours, searches for dolphins offshore first, then follows the coast to Benagil and back to the marina, and the boat enters the caves when conditions are suitable and safe. The meeting point is Marina de Lagos, Loja 10, opposite Marina Gate A to D. Dolphin sightings are a search for wild animals and are not guaranteed, the listing says.

How far is Albufeira from Benagil Cave?

About 25 km by road, roughly 30 minutes by car. Boats from Albufeira marina need 45 to 60 minutes each way along the coast.

Albufeira is the closest of the big resort towns. The drive runs west on the N125 to Lagoa, then south through Porches or Lagoa to the coast. A car makes this a half-day outing: leave early, park at Benagil or Marinha, take a short boat from the beach, then spend the afternoon on Praia da Marinha.

Without a car, the boats from Albufeira marina are the practical route. The Albufeira caves and dolphins tour runs 2.5 hours according to its listing, with a choice of a large catamaran or a semi-rigid RIB. The listing describes caves, secret beaches, swimming stops when the sea allows and a dolphin search, and says cave visits depend on sea conditions and the maritime authorities. It does not state that the boat enters the Benagil cave, which matters if the two minutes inside are the point of your day. Read the tour comparison before you choose.

Can you go to Benagil Cave by car?

Yes, to the village and its clifftop car park. The lot is small, partly paid, and fills by mid-morning in summer. Praia da Marinha has a larger free lot that also fills.

Driving is the most flexible way to reach Benagil, and the parking is the catch. The clifftop lot above Praia de Benagil holds a modest number of cars. In July and August it is full well before the first boats of the day are busy, and a Tripadvisor answer that circulates widely puts the safe arrival time at before 9 am. Treat that as the rule. Arrive early, park once, and stay.

  • Benagil lot: small, part-paid, steep walk down to the beach, fills by mid-morning in summer.
  • Praia da Marinha lot: large and free, a 30 minute clifftop walk from the Benagil skylight, also full by late morning in high season.
  • Kayak meeting point: the guided kayak listing names a parking lot called O Litoral and asks you to arrive 45 to 60 minutes early in high season to find a space.

If the Benagil lot is full, do not circle. Drive on to Marinha, park there, and walk west along the cliff. The walk is part of the day, not a penalty.

Is there a bus to Benagil?

Yes, but it is infrequent. VAMUS line 107 from Portimão stops at Praia do Carvalho, the nearest stop, about five times a day. Line 77 from Lagoa to Benagil runs twice a day on weekdays.

Public transport reaches Benagil, slowly. The useful service is VAMUS line 107 from Avenida Guarané in Portimão to Praia do Carvalho, about 40 minutes and roughly five departures a day. Carvalho is the next cove west of Benagil, with a short clifftop walk between them. Line 77 links Lagoa to Benagil itself, but runs twice a day on weekdays and not at all on some days. Check the VAMUS timetable the day before you travel.

From the bigger towns you need a connection. From Lagos, take bus 56 or the train to Estômbar-Lagoa and change to the 107; allow about two hours. From Albufeira, bus 51 to Lagoa then the 107, again about two hours. On a summer day that is a long trip for a two minute cave visit, which is why most visitors without a car book a boat from the town they are staying in instead.

How to visit Benagil Cave from Lagos

Three ways: drive 35 to 40 minutes and take a short boat from Benagil beach, join the 2.5 hour combo boat from Lagos marina, or drive 15 minutes to Portimão or Ferragudo for a mid-length speedboat.

Each route trades time for money and flexibility.

  1. Drive to Benagil. The cheapest cave time per hour. The small-group boat from Benagil beach lasts one hour according to its listing, departs from the sand with check-in 30 minutes before at the Taruga ticket shop, and passes 15 to 20 caves plus Carvalho and Marinha beaches. You need the early start for parking.
  2. Boat from Lagos marina. No driving, no parking, the longest ride. The Lagos combo spends its two and a half listed hours on dolphins and the full western coastline. The cave is a short stop near the far end.
  3. Boat from Portimão. Park in Portimão or Ferragudo, about 11 km and 15 minutes from Benagil by road. The Portimão RIB tour lasts 1.5 hours according to the listing, passes Ferragudo, Carvoeiro and Algar Seco before the cave, and has a sunset departure.

The table shows the road and sea options from the main starting points.

Is it worth renting a car in the Algarve for this?

For the cave alone, no. A boat from your base town covers it. For the cave plus Marinha, Carvoeiro, the clifftop trail and the quieter coves, a car pays for itself in one day.

Think about the rest of your week. If you are based in Lagos or Albufeira and the cave is a single excursion, a boat tour from the marina solves transport and parking in one booking, and you see the whole coastline on the way. Hire a car and you still face the Benagil parking problem at 9 am.

The case for a car is everything around the cave. Praia da Marinha with its double arch, Praia do Carvalho with its tunnel through the rock, Algar Seco at Carvoeiro, the Albandeira arch and the Alfanzina lighthouse are all within a few kilometres of each other and badly served by bus. With a car you can park at Marinha at 8 am, walk the cliff to the skylight, take a one hour boat from Benagil, swim at Marinha, and eat in Carvoeiro, all in a day. Timing matters as much as transport; our guide to the best time to visit explains the swell, the seasons and the light.

Where to stay to see Benagil caves

Carvoeiro for the shortest boat ride and the trail, Lagoa for a cheaper inland base with a car, Armação de Pêra for the eastern approach, and Portimão or Ferragudo for a town with a pier and a 15 minute drive.

Benagil itself has very few beds and most beach-facing businesses close in winter. Pick a base nearby instead.

  • Carvoeiro: the closest resort town, about 15 to 20 minutes from the cave by sea. The Carvoeiro boat trip leaves from the beach square and lasts 1.5 hours according to its listing. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail starts at Praia de Vale Centeanes on the edge of town.
  • Lagoa: the municipal town inland, on the N125 and the rail line, with the 107 and 77 buses to the coast. Practical with a car, dull without one.
  • Armação de Pêra: east of the cave, a long beach and a working fishing harbour. The Armação de Pêra boat tour departs from Praia dos Pescadores, one hour according to the listing, with the cave as the final stop.
  • Portimão and Ferragudo: a real town with a river pier, restaurants all year, and the cave 11 km away. Boats from the Portimão riverside take 30 to 45 minutes to reach Benagil.

Lagos and Albufeira both work if you accept the longer boat ride or the 30 to 40 minute drive. Faro is too far for a casual visit; the land day trip from Faro marina exists for that reason.
